Upkeep is a top priority when it comes to protecting your home or workplace from flames. Whether you run a family or a business, a lot can change over time! Regularly maintaining your property and educating your personnel or family about fire safety procedures will help you stay on top of fire precautions.
When owning a business, you onboard new personnel often. Each year, your team will consist of new employees who won’t be familiar with the current fire safety measures your workplace adheres to.
The same can be said about owning a home, too! The members of your home will need to be reminded of crucial fire prevention measures as they get older.
As the head of your household or the owner of a business, you’ll need to practice consistent fire precautions as well. From changing the batteries in your smoke alarms to updating your fire evacuation plan, there are plenty of ways to stay on top of fire safety!
Maintain Your Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms are a vital tool, but when they aren’t working as intended, they are useless! The NFPA states that nearly three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or alarms that weren’t working.
To ensure your smoke alarms are doing their job, make sure to test them at least once a month and replace your batteries once a year, if needed. Some newer models come with batteries designed to last until the expiration date, but still check them regularly.
The manufacturer date should help you know when your alarm needs to be replaced. You should make a point of replacing your alarm 10 years after that date, so it would be helpful to go ahead and set a reminder so you don’t forget!
Routinely Practice Your Fire Escape Plan
A regularly updated fire escape plan is a must in both residential and commercial properties. If there are any changes in your house or business facility that might affect a quick escape, you should revise your strategy to reflect these adjustments.
Your escape plan should be practiced multiple times throughout the year to ensure everyone understands where they need to go during a fire. You don’t want to unintentionally leave anyone behind!
Keep Your Property Clutter-Free
Organization in every room is another way to ensure your home or business is clear of the clutter that could get in the way during a fire emergency. While residential and commercial clutter can show up in different ways, cleanliness is essential in both settings.
It’s important to keep clutter out of the way of any fire exits or flammable materials. Additionally, a property that is clear of papers, dust, boxes, clothes and any other items that take up space can give fire less to work with if flames ignite.
If flames leave your home or business with damage that needs repairs, we are the team to contact. We can return your property to its pre-fire condition as soon as possible.
